What to know before you go abroad! A check-list for travellers.

24/09/2014

Before you go

  1. For up to date FCO travel advice check our travel advice widget on this site.
  2. Buy a good guidebook and find out all about your destination. Make sure you know about local laws and customs. For example, did you know that it is illegal to feed pigeons in Venice?
  3. Tell your family or close friends where you are going and leave them your contact details, insurance policy details, and your itinerary and/or store them on-line using a secure data storage site like SpiderOak.
  4. Whether you are travelling or living overseas, note the details of the nearest British Embassy or Consulate. In the event of some major crisis you can contact them for help and advice. If the country you are visiting experiences some political or natural disruption then keep up to date by checking our worldwide travel advice widget as above. The FCO also have a Facebook site here

Insurance

Get comprehensive travel insurance and check that it covers all the activities you plan to undertake. Be sure your policy provides for:

  • An Air Ambulance in case you need to be flown home
  • All medical bills (Which can be expensive)
  • Any pre-existing medical conditions you suffer with
  • Any potentially hazardous sports activities (Check with your insurer)
  • Bringing a body home in the event of a death
  • Replacing and/or bringing your car home

Plan to stay healthy

  1. Check what vaccinations and health precautions you need with your GP 6-8 weeks before you travel. Visit the NHS Fit for Travel website.
  2. Check if any medication you take is legal in the country you are going to visit. Always pack it in your hand baggage (Remember the liquid limits if you are flying)
  3. If you are taking prescribed medication take a copy of your prescription with you and find out if you will need a doctor's letter to take with you.
  4. If you are travelling within the European Economic Area get an EHIC (More information on EHICs here!). An EHIC does not replace the need for travel insurance. You should always have travel insurance.

Passports and Visas

Before you go make sure:
  • You have checked that your passport is still valid. Don't take an old out of date one by mistake as one of us did! Some cruise operators and airlines may require you to have a minimum of 3 or 6 months validity on your passport at the return date.
  • Make a note of your passport number and consider taking a photocopy with you and/or store it securely on-line (See above)
  • Write the full details of your next of kin in your passport
  • Check whether you need a visa for the country you are travelling to. Our worldwide travel advice widget (see above) can help you with this.
  • Take another form of ID with you with a photograph just in case your passport is lost or stolen

When you are there

Keep your passport secure at all times! Unless you are required to carry it with you make sure you have left it in a safe place.

Drugs

  1. Avoid any involvement with illegal drugs - the penalties are severe and could include the death penalty.
  2. Do not carry parcels or luggage through customs for other people

Money

Before you go:
  • Make sure you have enough to cover emergencies
  • Find out if travellers cheques are appropriate for your destination and keep a seperate record of their numbers
  • Check the expiry dates on your credit and debit cards. Make sure they don't expire before you get back!
  • Take the telephone numbers and/or email details of your card issuers just in case you need them replaced during your holiday.

Have a great holiday. Remember that as specialists for those looking for travel insurance with medical conditions we are uniquely placed to help you travel insured!
