6 Tips to help avoid DVT!

01/04/2014

Deep Vein Thrombosis - Travel Insurance

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a well-known side effect that can occur after taking long haul flights. A long haul flight would be one greater than 4 hours in duration. It is when the four hour mark is reached that the risk of DVT doubles.

What is Deep Vein Thrombosis - DVT?

DVT is when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the legs. It commonly occurs due to the immobilisation that we experience on long distance flights. Fortunately, the risk of developing DVT while travelling is normally very low - The World Health Organisation has issued information that the absolute risk is 1 in 6,000 on long haul flights.

However, there are factors which can increase the risk and these can include pre-existing medical conditions, but more commonly factors such as:

1. Obesity
2. Taking oral contraceptives
3. The presence of prothrombotic blood abnormalities
4. If you’ve had DVT before or had recent surgery

How can you avoid DVT?

There are a number of generally accepted methods for reducing the risk.

pink tick Hydration is a very good thing! Make sure you drink water and plenty of it before and during the flight.
pink tick The high risk area is the calves so make sure you exercise these on the plane. You can see some calf exercises for the plane here
pink tick Get up and walk around on the plane during the flight. Stretch
pink tick Avoid excess alcohol.
pink tick Avoid tight fitting socks or stockings.
pink tick Your doctor may advise you to wear specially designed support stockings which will reduce the risk, provided they are the right size for both your leg and calf measurements.

If you’ve had a previous DVT or recent surgery, it is important to advise your travel insurer of this, along with any other pre-existing medical conditions, to ensure you have full cover should you need medical attention overseas.

If you’re considered to be at high risk of developing a DVT, then an injection that helps to prevent blood clots, called a heparin injection, may be given by your doctor. You shouldn’t take aspirin or any other medications to thin the blood without seeking advice from your doctor first. If you take aspirin regularly on prescription, you should continue to take this as directed by your doctor.
