Tips on becoming a more sustainable traveller

28/02/2023

sustainable travel

As a society we have become much more mindful of doing our bit for the planet in recent years. With travel, there are plenty of ways in which you can reduce your impact on the environment, whilst still being able to enjoy exploring your chosen destinations.

Refuse to use single use plastics if possible.

One of the best ways to be more sustainable in your home life as well as whilst travelling, is to cut down on single use plastics. Instead of buying bottled water wherever you go, check that the water is safe to drink in the area and use a reusable bottle.

Just as you do at home, always take reusable bags to the shops instead of using the single use bags they provide. Make sure to purchase a reusable straw for drinks, if needed. Plastic straws are extremely damaging to the environment and wildlife, and although they are already banned in the UK, some countries have not caught up yet. You can also choose a bamboo or biodegradable toothbrush and bring soaps and shampoos in refillable bottles. All of this adds up and contributes to reducing plastic waste.

Go electric whenever you can.

When travelling or on holiday you may choose to rent a car to get from A to B or to explore interesting places. Most rental companies offer electric or hybrid alternatives to regular petrol cars which are a much more sustainable way of driving. Electric scooters are also growing in popularity around the globe, with a lot of big cities offering scooter rentals. Always be mindful of the type of transport you take.

Support local businesses.

Locally owned shops, restaurants and other businesses often source their goods and produce from small independent suppliers requiring less transportation and in turn contributing to a much smaller carbon footprint. Also, local businesses make a destination unique and are probably one of the reasons why you chose it in the first place. So, contributing to their business is a great way to give back to the community that you are a guest in.

Do not leave litter.

This one is straightforward. When you are on holiday or travelling you should continue to dispose of your waste correctly, just as you would at home. Litter kills and stunts planet growth, as well as trapping or damaging animals. Littering not only harms the environment, but it also spoils the aesthetics of the location. Nobody wants to see litter ruining the most beautiful places in the world.
