Winter Holiday Advice - Make sure your home is safe while you're away

05/01/2015

If you’re planning a winter holiday, make especially sure that you think about what might happen to your home and property while you’re away.

The last time we had freezing weather conditions around the UK insurance companies had to deal with over 100,000 claims for burst pipes alone. This may not be related to travel insurance and be covered by your home insurance instead but, for peace of mind, there are a few precautions you can take so you don’t have to worry while you’re away.

Don’t make it obvious

The best way to deter intruders is to make it look like you haven’t gone away and your home is occupied and lived in.
pink tick Cancel all deliveries such as milk, newspapers, vegetable boxes.
pink tick Bring any potted plants inside so there are no wilting flowers advertising your absence.
pink tick Leave your curtains open but be sure there are no valuables on display near the windows.
pink tick If you’re travelling without your car it may be a good idea to get a neighbour or friend to move your car around so that it does not stay in the same spot advertising the fact you are away.
pink tick Leave some lights on, or better still, purchase timer switches so that lights turn on and off at different times during the evening.

Cold Weather Precautions

pink tick Before you go, check your loft insulation is the recommended dimensions and still in good condition.
pink tick Check for dripping taps and leaking radiator valves and have them repaired if necessary.
pink tick Check for loose roof tiles and slates to reduce the risk of them falling off in bad weather.
pink tick Insulate water tank and pipes wherever possible. Lagging your water pipes will conserve heat when you’re home and stop them from freezing when you’re not. If someone else is keeping an eye on your house while you’re away, be sure to let them know where the stop tap is in case there is a burst pipe and the water supply needs to be switched off.
pink tick Keep your heating on low, just in case. Even programming it to come on for a short time once a day can help to keep things safe.
pink tick If you do leave your heating on, open your loft hatch so that warm air can get to your pipes.
pink tick If you don’t want to leave your heating on while you’re away, it’s best to drain the whole system and turn water off at the mains.
pink tick During severe weather conditions get a friend, relative or neighbour to keep an eye on your property every day.
