10 great tips for staying healthy abroad!

25/07/2014

Staying healthy when travelling abroad

Holidays are all about enjoying yourself, kicking back and generally getting away from it all. But don't let the excitement get in the way of a small bit of preparation before you go away to truly enjoy the whole holiday experience.

  1. Your GP can tell you if you need vaccinations for the country you are travelling to. Immunisation can prevent you catching potentially life threatening diseases, take antimalarials in countries where malaria is prevalent. There is also a fantastic website here that lists all the travel health information for most of the world.

  3. Get travel insurance to cover the cost of potentially high medical bills should you get sick, we at Travel Insured offer policies for people of any age, even those with pre existing medical conditions and will help you to find the right cover for your trip. In fact we can cover you up to age 120!
  4. Get a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in addition to your travel insurance to receive free and reduced rate healthcare in the European Economic Area and Switzerland.
  5. Pack a small first aid kit for minor injuries, Include painkillers and diarrhoea tablets and pack these appropriately in your hold baggage. Carrying them through the airport might mean confiscation if any part of the pack exceeds the current hand baggage liquid limits!
  6. Take enough prescription medicine with you to cover you for the whole trip and any spares in the event of flight delays.
  7. Drink lots of water in hot climates to prevent dehydration, making sure you drink bottled water to avoid water-borne diseases - ensure the lid of the bottle is well sealed before you buy it.
  8. Avoid drinking too much alcohol on flights and in hot climates - altitude and heat don't mix well with alcohol.
  9. Wear sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat in the sun to avoid sunstroke, avoid the sun during the hottest parts of the day, between 11am and 3pm or make sure you stay well hydrated or rest in the shade.
  10. During long journeys, move around as often as you can to avoid circulatory problems, if you have a pre existing medical condition, consult your doctor about any concerns you may have before you travel.
  11. Make a note of local emergency telephone numbers and the location of the nearest hospital to your holiday accommodation.

Advisor's Tip

We here at Travel Insured advise keeping your important details all together either in your purse or wallet or with your passport and other documents. Make sure you have your EHIC card (if travelling in EU), travel insurance policy number and emergency claim line number easily to hand should you need it you will know just where to look in the event of an emergency. It may also be handy to know or discuss this for the whole of your travelling party in case someone has to do it on your behalf or vice versa.
