Travel Insurance Guide for those in their Golden Years
(2 November 2016)

Have you discovered that travel insurance premiums have increased now that you’ve retired? Or that the insurer you’ve been with for years is now declining to renew your policy because you’ve reached a certain age? Frustrating isn’t it! But we’re here to tell you that age doesn’t need to be a barrier to enjoying future holidays abroad, and better still, we can help you find a suitable travel insurance provider who will welcome your custom.

Why Do I Need Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance is a necessary precaution to protect you if things don’t go to plan and should be high up on the list of priorities when arranging any trip abroad. Travel insurance for senior citizens can cover a range of eventualities, from cancellation, personal accidents, emergency medical expenses, repatriation back home, personal belongings, travel delay and more. ALL insurers who we recommend also provide a 24 hour emergency helpline, so help is only a phone call away no matter where you are!

Why Travel Insured?

Completing an online application form can be frustrating and often you’re not really sure what you’re buying. At Travel Insured we talk with you and listen to your requirements then we compare the different insurers who will be suitable for your needs. Whilst price is important we will also look at the cover, the claims service and the financial security of the insurer to make sure you get the right policy to protect you. We’ve been established for more than 25 years and are fully authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Getting Cover for Pre-Existing Medical Conditions

Such is life that as we age, we are prone to age related illness such as arthritis, blood pressure, type 2 diabetes to name but a few, and in many instances older people are prescribed precautionary medication to keep such conditions at bay. It’s important to declare all of your pre-existing medical conditions and the medical reasons why you take preventative medication, even if they have little impact on you daily living. This allows us to ensure that travel policy we recommend will meet your individual needs and give you protection in the event your existing medical conditions cause you any trip complications.

If you’re declaring medical conditions on behalf of a family member or an elderly friend, do make sure you’re aware of their medical history, and the reasons why medication is prescribed. In particular, ask if they have EVER been diagnosed with any heart, respiratory, circulatory, stroke or cancerous conditions, as most insurers require applicants to declare these as part of their medical declaration.

UK Travel Insurance

If you’re planning a break and booking two or more nights away in the UK, you may want to consider getting travel insurance to protect the money you have paid out for accommodation, travel and excursions. When comparing quotes do check the excess. There is a little point buying UK cover if the excess on the policy is higher or the same as the cost of the holiday, because there will be little or no money to actually claim back in the event of cancellation. When you speak to us we do this for you, saving you the worry.

Don’t Forget Your Travelling Companions

Lastly, we urge you to add your travelling companions to your policy. Being insured on the same policy protects your companions should you or your medical conditions cause any trip complications and vice versa. When insured separately you run the risk of being out of pocket should you need to cancel the holiday.

It pays to add travelling companion cover to your policy

(31 May 2016)

Are you aware that being insured separately to your travelling companions could in fact leave a gap in not only your travel insurance policy but your companions too? Travel insurance only covers for the persons named on the policy, which means, if your companions are insured with a different provider, that insurer is not obligated to pay out a claim if it’s in anyway related to you or your pre-existing medical conditions. Therefore your companions could face out of pocket expenses in the event of having to cancel the holiday or having to stay with you and arrange flights home at a later date should you become unwell, and vice versa.

But My Companion Doesn’t Have Any Medical Conditions

If you’re applying for specialist travel insurance because you have medical conditions to be covered, it's worth adding your companions to your policy, even if they do not have any medical conditions themselves. It’s often assumed that ‘well’ travelling companions can get cheaper cover elsewhere; however, you will find that specialist insurers don’t tend to load the premium and will add travelling companions on at a standard rate. This is a huge advantage, as your companions will not be charged for your pre-existing conditions but will receive the same cover benefits as you should something go wrong!

My Travelling Companion Already Has Cover Elsewhere

‘But My partner already has cover with the bank’ - We hear this all the time, and as explained previously, being insured on separate policies by two different insurers can leave both parties vulnerable. It’s worth knowing that if your companion has paid out for a policy within the last 14 days, they have a right to cancel and get a refund, providing they have not travelled or made a claim against the policy. However, it doesn’t matter if two policies are in place, but the important thing is, that your travelling companions are covered for your pre-existing conditions and not left out of pocket in the event of a claim.

How to Add Companions to Your Travel Insurance Policy

The best way is to include them at the time you apply and buy your cover. However, if you’re reading this article and thinking, I really need to add my travelling companions to my existing policy, then simply phone up your travel insurance provider and ask to add them and pay the additional premium. If your insurer informs you that they will need to set up a new policy for your companion(s), ask them to ensure that the two policies are linked together providing cover for each other’s eventualities in an event of a claim.

  • Travelinsured's tip is, ‘if you’re travelling together, be insured together!’

Over 20,000 UK passports lost or stolen: Find out how to keep yours safe

[July 20th 2015]

Tips for keeping your passport safe

The FCO has provided the following tips to help you keep your passport safe when you are travelling abroad

  • Be aware of your surroundings and be wary of strangers who take an unusual amount of interest in you.
  • A damaged passport cannot be used for travel, so value it and keep it safe
  • Lock your passport in a safe if you have access to one, or if you are required to keep it with you, ensure its location is not visible
  • Make two photocopies of your passport – leave one with friends or family and take the second with you, or store an electronic copy securely. Where permitted, use your photocopy as alternative ID, for example when going out at night
  • For certain countries your passport must be valid for 6 months after the date you travel – check the entry requirements before you go
  • Ensure you fill in the emergency details / next of kin page before you go
